Location and history:

For the locality and discovery, cf. {197}

According to Macalister, CIIC, this stone was placed "under the second lintel to support it" in the souterrain.

The inscription is mentioned by McNeill, JRSAI 39, 1909, 135 (ad {2}) because of CUNACENA as an example of geminates and non-geminates both written as single characters.

Size according to CIIC: 4'0" x 0'11" x 0'4 1/2"

Published illustrations:

Brash, OIM, pl. XXXII ("A") ( draft).

Macalister, CIIC 1, 194 ( draft).

Reading Brash, OIM 233 ("no. 3"):

ᚉᚒᚅᚐᚉᚓᚅᚐ

CUNACENA

"In its present position the stone is turned bottom upwards"; a former impression that it could have to be read vice versa starting with *[M]AQE cannot be upheld because there is not a trace of an M. CUNACENA is a "familiar name", also to be found a Trallong {342} in Wales.

Reading Ferguson, OI, 107 (178.):

Cunacena

"The pillar bears on one angle the name of Ptolemaic note in the district, Cunacena".

Reading Macalister, Epig. 2, 91 (90. / III.):

ᚉᚒᚅᚐᚉᚓᚅᚐ

CUNACENA

"`Of Conchenn'". The same name meaning `Doghead' appears at Trallong {342} in the genitive form Cunoceni.

Reading Macalister, CIIC:

CUNACENA

The inscription is written in "very neatly chiselled scores".

Interpretation Korolev, DP 84:

CUNACENA

The inscription is preserved complete; it has to be dated into the end of the 5th or the beginning of the 6th cent.

Reading McManus, Guide 65:

CUNACENA

Reading Gippert (1978/1981):

Dexter angle, up:
