Size according to Brash, OIM 203 (No. 6): 3'6" x 1'3" x 8"

Size according to Macalister, CIIC: 3'6" x 1'4" x 0'8"

Published illustrations:

Graves apud Ferguson, PRIA 15, 1871, 55 ( woodcut, dexter angle only);

Brash, OIM pl. XXIII fig. 6 ( draft);

Macalister, CIIC ( draft of upper part only).

Reading Graves apud Ferguson, PRIA 15, 1871, 55:

TRIA MACUA MAILAGNI

"The three sons of Maoilan".

"Perhaps we have here ancient plural forms. .. This interpretation is confirmed by the appearance on the monument of a cross, each member of which is trifid."

Reading Ferguson, PRIA 15, 1871, 62:

"N(orth) side":

CURCITTI

"S(outh) side":

TRIAMAQAMAILAGNI

"Proposed Verbation":

curcitti. tria maqamailagni.

The stone is assigned "No. XV" in Ferguson's "List of Moulds of

Inscribed Stones from .. Localities in the Barony of Corkaguiney".

Reading Brash, OIM 204:

"Left-hand angle":

ᚉᚒᚏᚉᚔᚈᚈᚔ

CURCITTI

"On the right":

ᚈᚏᚔᚐᚋᚐᚊᚐᚋᚓᚑᚂᚐᚌᚅᚔ

TRIAMAQAMEOLAGNI

TRIA MACUA MEOLAGNI

"TRIA THE SON OF MEOLAGAN"

The reading agrees with Windele's copy from 1848 "excepting the 8th and 9th of the second line, out of which he forms one letter, C". Ferguson's reading disagrees with his own paper cast which "gives Meol, and not Mail; the vowel difference is of little consequence." Curcitti is "the genitive of Curcitt. The same form has been found on one of the stones at Kinard" {189}; on "one found at Lougher .. we have `Curci'" {195}. - Cp. Maglagni at Lanfechan {353: Llanwenog}; "Maelogan or Maelon, is a frequent name in our indices. Gaulish forms, Mallonius .. Grut. 803-13 .. Patav. Maleius .. Grut. 878,8 .. in agr. Graez." - As against Graves's interpretation of the cross on the surface, Brash argues that "crosses with trifurcated and bifurcated ends are frequently met with." - "In the Mart.Don. we find Trea, in three instances, as a female name; as masculine names, Trian, Trichem, Trimeach; in the Ann. 4. Mas. A.D. 733, Trian, son of a Leinster chief."

Reading quoted by Meyer, ZCP 8, 179:

MAILAGNI CURCITTI

This substitutes a normal MAILAGNI maqi CURCITTI; the ellipsis of MAQI is attested elsewhere too.

Reading Ferguson, OI 32 (43.):

"North or right side":

CURCITTI

"The same name (is to be) noticed at Kinard" {189}.

"Opposite side .. rounding the top":

TRIAMAQAMAILAGNI

Tria Maqa Mailagni

This is "the first stone to the left" when entering the site. - The same name as CURCITTI is "noticed at Kinard" {189}. - "Nothing is disputed save whether Mailagni should not be read Meolagni", the six vowel scores being "undivided". A "question for more serious consideration is whether the maqa here is a feminine, in agreement with Tria, and the same with the seeming Maqa of the Aglish stone" {141}? Then, is Tria "a personal name or a numeral, a singular or a plural?"

Reading Macalister, Epig. 1, 37 (17. / ):

ᚈᚏᚔᚐᚋᚐᚊᚐᚋᚐᚔᚂᚐᚌᚅᚔ

TRIAMAQAMAILAGNI

ᚉᚒᚏᚉᚔᚈᚈᚔ

CURCITTI

This inscription "is a crux .. There never was any other writing on the stone, so all attempts to connect Mailagni with Curcitti by an assumed lost mucoi are futile. .. Hence .. we must regard the Curcitti as an independent inscription. There is, however, no other instance of the reappropriation of an Ogham except at Kilmalkedar {187} and Caldey Isld. {427} .. The Gortatlea monument {252: Gurrane} is obscure .. There is .. nothing to warrant us in taking this stone as commemorating two people, one in the nominative, the other in the genitive; nor yet in regarding Curcittos as an ancestor of Tria. - Professor Rhŷs and Dr Whitley Stokes [where?] agree in regarding the first inscription as containing genitives plural .. Rhŷs by assuming the iteration of the m's (a very common phenomenon in Runes, but otherwise unknown in Ogham); Dr. Stokes by taking maqa for maqa(n)." - For Mailagnos cp. the Llanfechan stone {353: Llanwenog}; this is Middle Ir. Maelán. - "Curc-itt-, like Cun-itt-, is a derivative (? diminutive) from Curc-, a name found in its simple form at Rathmalode" {195}. - "The two inscriptions can be connected only by assuming tria maqa to be a partitive genitive and construing `Stone of Curcittos (one) of the three sons of Mailagnos.'"

Reading Macalister, CIIC:

Dexter angle:

TRIA MAQA MAILAGNI

This "must be understood as TRIAM MAQAM MAILAGNI, `of the three sons of Mailagnos' - an example of the genitive plural as yet unique."

Sinister angle:

CURCITTI

This is not one of the three sons, but "the different technique of the two lines shews that one of the inscriptions is the original epitaph, the other an intrusion". - "It was mere fancy on the part of an early critic [i.e., Ch. Graves] to imagine any connexion between the triple ends of the arms of the cross and the `three sons'".

Interpretation Korolev, DP 78:

a. CURCITTI

b. TRIA MAQA MAILAGNI

The two inscriptions are independent; the second one is unique in its meaning: `(the stone) of the three sons of M.'. Macalister interprets the forms as TRIAM MAQAM; but the Proto-Irish ending must have been *-an. We rather have an assimilation of -nm- > -mm- here. Geminates were often not written as such in Oghamic writing.

Reading McManus, Guide 65:

TRIA MAQA MAILAGNI͵ CURCITTI

Reading OSDP, 18 (1):

TRIA MAQA MAILAGNI CURCITTI

"There is also a cross inscribed on this stone."

Reading Gippert (1978):

"Surface angle, dexter - top":

TRIA MAQA MAILAGNI

ᚈᚏᚔᚐᚋᚐᚊᚐᚋᚐᚔᚂᚐᚌᚅᚔ

ᚆᚆᚆᚋᚋᚋᚋᚋᚐᚐᚐᚐᚐ᚞ᚐᚋᚐᚆᚆᚆᚆᚆᚐᚋᚐ᚞ᚐᚐᚐᚐᚐᚁᚁᚐᚋᚋᚁᚁᚁᚁᚁᚐᚐᚐᚐᚐ

Between I and A of the first word, there is a clear gap; the separation of the second vowel group is less clear.

"Surface angle, sinister-up":
