Explanation of terms

Khinalug belongs to the Lezgian subgroup of the Daghestan languages, but is considered to be isolated within the group.

Area of distribution

It is spoken by about 2,000 people living on the village of Khinalug, which lies at about seven thousand feet in the Kuba district of the Azerbaijan SSR. Khinalug is separated from other Daghestan lanuages by the Caucasus chain and its only Daghestan neibour are Kryts (Alik and Kryts villages).
A long time ago the Khinalugs lived surrounded by the Azerbaijans. That is why the influence of the  Azerbaijan lahuage is felt not only in the vocabulary but also in the phonetics and grammar.
